‘Rock of Ages’ Returns to Lexington Amphitheater

Go back in time to the 1980s for a musical experience known as “Rock of Ages,” playing at the Icehouse Amphitheater. The rock music production returns for its second year starting this week.

“It’s a unique theatrical experience unlike any other theater,” said Ivy Munnerlyn, owner of Likely Story Productions. “It’s a different sort of theatrical experience including pyrotechnics, incredible sound lighting.”

“It’s a fun time,” she continued. “All of the cast members returned for this year. It’s a combo of a concert and musical theater.”

In addition to the musical theater aspect, there’s also a live band playing ’80s rock hits. Audience members can expect to hear hits made famous by bands such as Journey, Def Leppard and Poison, among others.

The Broadway musical was turned into a major motion picture in 2012.

The show centers on a bar in West Hollywood, with the premise being that there’s no perfect way to achieve one’s dreams, Munnerlyn said. The show takes place on the Sunset Strip, with a variety of characters, including a small-town girl who wants to be an actress, a busboy, a bar owner, and German father-son real estate developer. There’s romance, comedy and lots of music.

Due to some of the story elements, Munnerlyn advised the show is PG-13, although she said they did tone down some of the cursing.

The show runs about two and a half hours. and there will be food trucks and drinks available for purchase prior to the show.

“Plan to spend your night with us,” Munnerlyn said.

The play is arranged by Concord Theatricals and made possible at the Icehouse Amphitheater by Likely Story Productions. Last year was Likely Story’s first production in Lexington at the amphitheater and Munnerlyn wants to continue the tradition of putting together a show every year in August.

“The Icehouse Amphitheater lets us do our thing and it’s been a really good experience,” she said.

Putting on a show at the amphitheater is different from a traditional theater. They have less time to prepare at an outside venue. But there is more seating compared to an indoor theater, Munnerlyn said.

Next year, the production company hopes to put on the Jimmy Buffett musical “Escape to Margaritaville.”

“It’s just such a rewarding experience with something awesome to show for it,” Munnerlyn offered.
