Zombies out in West Columbia for Halloween

Posted

Halloween night is getting closer and that means zombies are lurking at  1705 Redbird Lane in West Columbia.

The zombie posse is comprised of scary wooden figures crafted by artist Jeff Matthews who lives at the house that has presented the attraction for the last four years.

Matthews cut out and sketched the zombies. He created the zombie gaggle to draw visitors to his, and his wife Candy’s home, for Halloween.

Matthews said the display has definitely attracted more trick-or-treaters and that was his intent. But that is not all that has happened since 2015, when he first displayed the wooden cut-outs.

“You’ll see car after car coming by, slowing down to get a glimpse of the eerie visage. Matthews has even added colored lights, and sometimes there’s a fog- generated by dry ice- to set an even creepier mood.

Matthews said it takes about 30 minutes to cut out a zombie, and two hours to sketch one. The figures are so popular, he has sold them to fans of zombie shows like “The Walking Dead.”
