The top-ranked Hartsville Red Foxes (11-0) defeated the Brookland-Cayce Bearcats (7-5) by a score of 68-35 Friday night at Kellytown Stadium
Thanks to a muffed punt by Hartsville, the Bearcats struck first with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Reed Charpia to Jo Predubsri to go up 7-0 with 8:28 left in the first.
The Bearcats then went up 14-0 off a pick-six from Paul Edwards with 1:16 left in the first. The Red Foxes would strike back to end the first quarter with a 38-yard run from JD Pendergrass to make the score 14-7. Hartsville started off very sloppy with three first-quarter turnovers.
Early in the second quarter Hartsville QB Tiyon Evans turned the ball overagain with a fumble. Brookland Cayce capitalized on the fumble with a Charpia 26-yard touchdown pass to Cam Morris to go up 21-7 with 7:02 remaining in the half.
Evans then scored for the Red Foxes with 5:18 left in the half to put Hartsville within 7 at 21-14.
Charpia then hit Malachi Brown with a 57-yard touchdown pass to make the score 28-14 with four minutes to go in the 2nd quarter. Evans scored again on a short run with 1:08 left in the half to make the score 28-21.
Hartsville started the second half off with a drive, finished off with a jet sweep to Dariyan Pendergrass to tie the score at 28 with 7:22 left in the third quarter. Hartsville capitalized on great field position with a pass from Evans to Pendergrass which put the Red Foxes up 34-28 after a missed extra point with 6:03 in the third.
Evans would keep the momentum rolling for the Red Foxes with a 48-yard run to go up 41-28 with 4:02 to play in the third. A Keon Middleton interception for BC then set Charpia up for a 52-yard touchdown pass to Latrell Jamison to make the score 41-35 late in the third. The Red Foxes would score again to go up 47-35 to end the third quarter. Another Hartsville touchdown with 7:30 left in the game would put the game out of reach and the Red Foxes did not look back.
Hartsville will go on to face North Augusta next Friday night.
