Body found in quarry matches description of missing USC student

A body of a male was found Sunday afternoon. It matches the description of a missing University of South Carolina student, said Richland County Sheriff’s Department deputies.

USC student Samuel Laundon, 19, was reported missing at about 1 Saturday afternoon, according to the RCSD.

The body was found in some shrubbery in the Vulcan Materials Co. Quarry around 5 p.m. Sunday.

A search of the area began after Laundon, was reported missing. He was with friends near the quarry in the Olympia-Granby area around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Laundon jump over a fence and his friends said he didn’t climb back over the fence. They eventually got a ride home.

The search for the teen involved a plane, a helicopter, a drone and K-9 units. The Columbia Fire Department assisted with the search.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not yet confirmed that the body is Laundon’s.
