Cayce practices coronavirus preparedness, 2 cases suspected

Posted

On Friday, Cayce City Manager Tracy Hegler attended a task force of local leaders regarding preparedness measures and resources for dealing with the coronavirus.

On Saturday, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control confirmed that two women in the state yielded a positive test result for Covid-19. Those cases still have to be confirmed by the Center for Disease Control. One was in Kershaw County, involving a woman in her 80s. The other was in Charleston County and involved a woman in her 30s.

DHEC is monitoring individuals who have traveled to impacted areas, said Dr. Linda Bell of DHEC, at a Saturday news conference, conducted by Gov. Henry McMaster.

"Healthcare authorities in S.C. have been preparing for this eventuality and there is no reason for public alarm," said McMaster.

The City of Cayce shared an update on the virus. The update explained that "Covid-19 is a respiratory virus with flu-like symptoms that is spread person to person. If you experience a high fever and difficulty breathing, please contact your primary healthcare professional.

The city also relayed some important prevention tips:

- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.

- Stay home when you are sick.

- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

City officials also said is is "prepared in case of any confirmed cases in our region." And added: "there is not an immediate danger to you; but we want to share these precautionary measures and facts as an extra layer of safety for our Cayce citizens and our Cayce businesses."
