2nd fire evacuation in a week

Gilbert Elementary students were again evacuated due to a fire in the building.
At about 12:45 p.m., Gilbert Elementary School staff noticed smoke coming from a restroom from a small fire.
All students and staff are safe and accounted for.
The fire was put out immediately. Everyone is now back in the building.
There is still a faint smoke smell in the area of the fire, Lexington District 1 spokesperson Mary Beth Hill said in an email.

The principal immediately informed the district’s Safety and Emergency Services Director, who was able to pull video from the video cameras located throughout the school.
The video showed that a student set the fire.
In accordance with district policy and procedure, administrators contacted the student’s parents and suspended the student while he waits for a meeting with the district’s hearing officer.
