House of Raeford sold 200,000 pounds of chicken, one 40-pound-box at a time at its community chicken sale, Tuesday.

“There’s a lot of pressure on the grocery stores,” said Chuck Underhill of House of Raeford. “They may not have chicken. We wanted to take some of the pressure off of them and give something to help the community.”

He also said the chicken that was sold at a discount of around70 percent. It is a good way to help struggling families, who may not have a job because of the coronavirus crisis.

Cars lined Sunset Boulevard, and in a serpentine fashion rolled through the Capitol Square Parking lot waiting for their turn to buy. The sale started at 9 a.m. and did not end until 1:30 p.m., an hour-and-a-half after schedule.

Underhill said there are no plans to hold another sale, right now, but House of Raeford will evaluate conditions, and plans could change.
