Springdale shines as host of Summerfest

Posted

The Town of Springdale threw a pre-Fourth of July party and hundreds came.

The Springdale Summerfest and Golf Cart Parade commenced Saturday.

Entrants in the Golf-Cart Parade, that kicked off the festival, were tasked with representing a Springdale summer. Decorations included rainbows, swimming pools, sharks and even the popular cartoon character Sponge Bob Square Pants. US Rep. Joe Wilson, of Sprigdale, also rode in the parade.

"So far from what I can tell we've had a great turnout," said Springdale Mayor Pro-Tem Juston Ricard,  an organizer of the event.

After the Golf Cart Parade down Platt Springs Road a crowd gathered in the park beside Springdale Town Hall and listened to Lexington County favorite country singer Trent Jeffcoat. Dozens of kids took advantage of the Springdale Splash Pad. Others got something to eat.

"We have bar-b-que sandwiches, hot dogs, snow-cones, boiled peanuts and watermelon," said Ricard. More food selections, said Ricard, were added this year. "And it is all free."

He also said the Summerfest, which started at 11 a.m. last year, was moved to a 6 p.m. start time this year. A band (Trent Jeffcoat) and fireworks were added, with the new 9 p.m. end time.

Ricard estimated about 25 percent of the crowd came from Springdale and the rest from neighboring communities.

He said the town has been planning for the party for four months and he is pleased with the result.
"Overall, I think the response is tremendous," said Ricard. "It's going very well."
