Clemson, South Carolina learn bowl game opponents

Posted

Both Clemson University and the University of South Carolina football teams learned their respective bowl destinations Sunday.

Following Saturday’s 34-10 win over Notre Dame in the ACC title game, the 2nd ranked Tigers once again earned a berth in the College Football Playoff. For the 3rd time in 5 years, they will face 3rd ranked and Big 10 champion Ohio State in the All-State Sugar Bowl.

The game will air New Year’s Day on ESPN at 8:45 pm.

It’s a return trip to New Orleans, La. for Clemson, which lost to LSU in last season’s CFB national championship game. The winner will face either top-ranked Alabama or Notre Dame in this year’s final Jan. 11 in Miami, Fla.

The Tigers (10-1) are 4-0 all-time against the Buckeyes (6-1), including last year’s 29-23 comeback victory.

While Clemson will vy for a 4th national championship, South Carolina will look to close out its worst season in 2 decades on a winning note.

The Gamecocks (2-8) will face Conference USA champion the University of Alabama of Birmingham (6-3) in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl on Dec. 26 in Tampa, Fla. The game will air on ABC.

While its South Carolina’s 1st ever appearance in the bowl game, the setting is familiar. Raymond James Stadium is where the Gamecocks defeated Michigan in both the 2013 and 2017 Outback Bowl.

The 2013 bowl victory was notable for “The Hit” by future NFL defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney in the 4th quarter on Wolverine running back Vincent Smith.

South Carolina is 3-0 all-time against the Blazers, the last meeting in 2012. It has all 3 meetings by double digits.
