Title run ends for White Knoll after loss in deciding game of District 5 final

The Lexington Wildcats varsity softball team dominated the Class 5A District 7 championship game, winning by a 15-1 score in five innings.

The Lady Wildcats took a 4-0 lead thanks in part to a 2-run homer from Hannah Kumiyama off the scoreboard. It was the 1st of 3 round-trippers and 6 RBI for the University of South Carolina-bound senior.

Kumiyama added another 2-run shot in the second before Jessica Senn drove in her 2nd run of the contest to extend the lead to 7-0.

The Lady Wildcats weren’t done scoring yet, however. Sarah Gordon drove in two runs with a long double to make it 9-0. Kumiyama then belted her 3rd home run of the game one over the fence, this time a solo shot, to make it 10-0.

The Lady Wildcats kept the rout going with a 2-run double by Saige Stanley and 2 more runs scored off an error to cap off an 8-run third inning.

Berkeley never managed to get their offense going against a solid defensive performance by the Wildcats, missing several opportunities to score by leaving runners on base in addition to giving away runs on errors.

With 2 outs in the 4th, Kumiyama showed her pitching skills off on the mound. After relieving Allie Light, who struck out 4, she held the Stags scoreless until Haley Wilkerson drove in the Lady Stags’ only run of the game in the fifth with an RBI single.

Kumiyama struck out the final Stags batter to end the game on the 10-run rule and Lexington (21-3) will travel to Ashley Ridge to open the Class 5A Lower State tournament.

"Our goal has been to win in the end, so we are taking everything one pitch at a time," First-year Lexington head coach Laurie Epps said. "I’m proud of how our team is coming together and playing right now. Everyone has embraced their role and playing for the team. We are selfless and focused on the end result."

White Knoll 1, Cane Bay 0 (Game 1 – 9 innings)

Cane Bay 3, White Knoll 1 (Game 2)

The state championship run for the Lady Timberwolves ended Wednesday night in Summerville.

After winning Game 1 in extra innings on an RBI sacrifice fly by Shelby Davies and getting 8 strikeouts from pitcher Andrea Lyon, White Knoll’s offense continued to struggle against the Lady Cobras.

Down 1-0, Mackenzie McElroy belted a solo home run to tie the game in the Bottom 2nd. The Lady Cobras answered back with an RBI fielder’s choice bunt by Hailey Howell and the Top 3rd and an RBI double by Mallena Wright in the 4th.

Jenna Krol held the Lady Timberwolves to 1 hit in 4 2/3 innings of relief. Hannah Goodwin accounted for 2 hits and Lyon struck out 6 in her final game with the Lady Timberwolves.

White Knoll ends the season at 20-2, while Cane Bay will open the Class 5A Lower State tournament at South Florence.

Ashley Ridge 2, Dutch Fork 0
Despite an 11-strikeout, 1-hit allowed effort Morgan State and 2 hits from Kelcy Putlock, the Lady Silver Foxes could not muster enough offense against the Lady Swampcats in the Class 5A Lower State District 8 final.
Winning pitcher Katie Freeman struck out 12 and Ashley Ridge scored twice in the Bottom 6th. One of the runs came off the third error of the game by Dutch Fork (12-6).
The Lady Swampcats will play host to Lexington to open the Class 5A Lower State tournament.
