History was made in spectacularly dominant fashion Monday night by the Gilbert wrestling team.
The Indians routed Aynor 48-32 in the 3rd round of the S.C. High School League tournament. It marked the program's first-ever trip to the Lower State final where it face a familiar foe at a familiar place.
"We let our guys do their stuff," Gilbert head coach Mitch Hudson said. "They knew we were working towards something, so they got out and took care of business. We did what I kind of think we should do at this time of year."
Gilbert opened Monday's contest with 8 consecutive pinfalls to take a 48-0 lead. Dalton Price accounted for 1 of the pinfalls for his 101st career victory.
"We definitely went in with the right mindset, thinking that we needed to get in and get our business done," Price said. "So I felt like going in with that thought process definitely helped out."
"We let our guys do their stuff," Gilbert head coach Mitch Hudson said. "They knew we were working towards something, so they got out and took care of business. We did what I kind of think we should do at this time of year."
After Aynor won its first match by decision, it closed the match with 6 straight wins - 4 via forfeit, 1 pinfall and 1 decision.
For the second time this season, Gilbert will visit May River. The Indians edged the Sharks 37-33 back in January and another victory will advance them to the Class 3A final Saturday at Airport High School.
"We were a little bit down (early in the season)," Hudson said. "I think right now, as far as wrestling goes and conditioning goes, I think we're getting to be where we need to be and this is the right year to do it as a team.
"We've  still got some stuff ahead of us. May River is going to present a challenge. We've got to make sure that we're ready Wednesday night, but we're on the uphill. We're still climbing and we feel good about that."
