West Columbia’s “dream season” received a shock of reality over the weekend.
Head coach Dargan Lybrand confirmed Monday an unidentified player had tested positive for covid-19. The player is currently being quarantined at home.
The rest of the team has received tests, with those that have returned so far showing negative, according to Lybrand.
(NOTE - Players signed a covid-19 waiver letter prior to signing up with their S.C. American Baseball Summer League team).
If Post 79 have 9 or more players available, its Game 1 S.C. American Baseball Summer League playoff matchup with Florence Post 1 will take place 7:30 pm Tuesday at Legion Field. It was originally scheduled to take place Monday at Midlands Sports Complex in West Columbia.
West Columbia would now play host to Games 2 and (if necessary) 3 on Wednesday. The winner advances out of Bracket 2 to the state tournament starting Friday at Segra Park.
In addition to the stricken player, West Columbia will not have valuable pitcher Sam LaFrage. Like Lexington Post 7’s Travis Elliott of Gilbert, the Airport High graduate reported to The Citadel.
West Columbia has a 12-1-1 record after winning the Midlands Division. Its lone loss was a forfeit to Sumter Post 15, which looks to clinch a berth out of Bracket 2 with a Game 2 win Monday against Lexington at Roscoe Frye Field.
