Needing 2 wins to advance to the state final, Dutch Fork defeated River Bluff twice Wednesday to claim the Class 5A Lower State baseball title.

The Silver Foxes won Game 1 by a 4-2 score to snap the Gators’ 10-game winning streak and 7-game win streak at home. They then completed the sweep in The Swamp with a 6-2 victory to dethrone the 2-time Lower State champions.

Dutch Fork (22-10) will open the Best-of-3 series Saturday at Blythewood High School. The Bengals, coached by Lexington High School alumnus and former player/assistant coach Banks Faulkner, shut out J.L. Mann 3-0 to win the Upper State title.

A full story on Wednesday’s games by Justin Hall will run later today.

Midland Valley 2, Airport 0

The quest for a 2nd straight state title appearance ended Wednesday for the Eagles at the hands of their Region 5-4A nemesis.

Despite 7 hits, Airport committed 4 errors, 1 of which led to a 2-run single in the Bottom 3rd.

The Mustangs advanced to the Class 4A final where they will open Game 1 Saturday at Eastside. Meanwhile, the Eagles finished the season 17-13-1.

Oceanside Collegiate 13, Gray Collegiate 0

For the 2nd time this post-season, the War Eagles were defeated by their sister school.

Jack Mahony drove in 3 runs and 3 players had 2 RBI to lead the Landsharks into the Class 2A final.

Gray Collegiate ends its season with a 22-11 record, while Oceanside Collegiate will open the Best-of-Series Class 2A final Saturday at Landrum.

SOFTBALL

Central 3, Batesburg-Leesville 2

Hannah Killough’s walkoff RBI single in the Bottom 7th lifted the Lady Eagles past the Lady Panthers in the Class 2A Upper State playoffs.

Batesburg-Leesville rallied to tie the game 2-2 in the Top 7th on RBI singles by Amie Johnson and Gracie Louk. Kiara Quattlebaum followed with a single, but Hannah Derrick was thrown out at the plate.

Central travels to Ninety-Six Friday for the Class 2A Upper State final. Batesburg-Leesville ends the season with a 16-7 record.

Class 5A Lower State Final set

The Lexington High School softball team will play host to Ashley Ridge in the Class 5A Lower State final at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

The Lady Wildcats are riding a 15-game winning streak and are 5-0 in the post-season. The Lady Swamp Foxes defeated South Florence 7-1 on Wednesday and need 2 wins to advance to the state final.

The winner will open the Best-of-Three Series Monday at either J.F. Byrnes or Fort Mill.
