SCISA schools adjust plan to resume sports

Posted

As S.C. High School League schools prepare to reopen its athletics facilities, its private school counterpart has already made changes on its current plans.

The S.C. Independent School Association has pushed back Phase 2 of its 2.5 part phase-in effort to resume full sporting activities from Monday to June 18. The decision was made it light of a “significant bump or spike” in the number of covid-19 cases the past week.

In a statement from Athletics Director Mike Fanning, this delay will provide SCISA an additional week of medical information to determine any need to reconsider or adjust workout guidelines.

Phase 2 of the SCISA plan would build off the steps placed in Phase 1 by allowing the use of equipment balls, passing and catching into football workouts. It would also allow groups/pods of 10 or less people, including coaches, with social distancing from 6 feet to 3 feet.

“SCISA is promoting a gradual period of phased-in activities, strength & conditioning, and skill training, factoring that students have missed over two months of sports, practice and conditioning this past spring. Dead periods are up to each individual school, team and coach,” Fanning said. “The week of July 4 and July 27-29 are available for workouts.”

Northside Christian and W.W. King Academy are the lone Chronicle Country schools. Lexington Districts 1 and 3 are scheduled to open fall sports workouts on Monday.
