UNDEFEATED CHAMPIONS - Lady Eagles defeat Fort Mill 9-6 to win Class 5A girls' lacrosse title

Same place, different classification and much different outcome.
After 2 straight losses in the S.C. High School League state finals in Class 4A, the Chapin girls' lacrosse team had another championship opportunity Saturday at W.C. Hawkins Stadium in Class 5A.
Trailing Fort Mill 4-3 at halftime, it appeared the Lady Eagles were headed for the same outcome.
Chapin's senior-laden squad would not be denied a final chance at a championship. Outscoring the Lady Yellow Jackets 6-2 in the 2nd half, the Lady Eagles pulled away for the 9-5 victory before its raucous fans on the Irmo High School campus.
The victory completed an undefeated season for the Lady Eagles at 16-0. The team's 1st ever state title was also the 53rd won in a team sport, regardless of gender by Chapin High School.
"For sure, all of us are going to sleep like babies tonight," said senior Jordan Green, who proclaimed having sleepless nights until the team won the state title and whose goal in the final 2 minutes clinched the victory.
For Green's mother and head coach Jennifer Green, the championship was the culmination of her efforts to build a championship program 6 years ago with players who had difficulty just fielding the ball.
"Now, we're transitioning the ball downfield beautifully," Green said. "It's just amazing to watch the progression. I'm super proud of these girls."
Chapin jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the 1st half on goals by Sadie Salazar and Eden Ellison. After Shannon Rychener answered a Lady Yellow Jacket goal to make it 3-1, Fort Mill scored 3 unanswered goals over the final 13 minutes to go into the lockerroom up 4-3.
"What were we doing," said an exasperated elder Green in response to the halftime deficit. "That what was going through my mind because we weren't playing our game at that point. We weren't settled, we were forcing passes, we weren't coming up with groundballs. It was nerve-wrecking, but once we got that timeout, I knew some good things were going to start happening."
After the two teams exchanged goals to open the 2nd half, Chapin took charge. It outscored Fort Mill 5-1 the rest of the way with 2 goals by Riley Floyd and scores by  Salazar, Green and Angel Tisdale to seal the title victory.
"We worked so hard every day," Salazar said. "It was all we think about and we finally did it. It means the world to us."
