West Columbia falls to Aiken in American Legion baseball

Posted

The Aiken at West Columbia American Legion baseball showdown was a game of big innings on the Brookland-Cayce High School campus in Cayce, Monday night.

In the end, Aiken had more fire power and took a 15-8 win. But it did not look promising for Aiken early.

West Columbia jumped out to a big lead, scoring 5 runs in the second inning, and another run in the third. Aiken put two runs on the board in the fourth. West Columbia answered with two runs in bottom of the fourth for an 8-2 lead.

But that was where it changed. Aiken got hot in the fifth inning, scoring six runs to tie the game at 8. Hunter Corley had a two-run homer for Aiken in that inning.

In the sixth, Aiken blew it open. A mis-played fly ball resulted in an Aiken run, and Aiken went up 9-8. Aiken then loaded the bases and Brenden Meyer's grand slam put Aiken up 13 8.

West Columbia went down 1-2-3 in their half of the 6th. In the seventh, Aiken scored two more for the final of 15-8.

Brandon Caughman was charged with the loss for West Columbia. Brenden Meyer got the win for Aiken.

With the win, Aiken secures a Region III playoff spot. West Columbia finishes out the season, at home, Tuesday night versus Orangeburg.
