Are you at risk of a fall?

Posted

September is National Falls Prevention Awareness Month.

Falls can be devastating.

It can be upsetting when we are not available to help our family member or friend in need after a fall.

I recently had an opportunity to speak with Kalyn Oswald, Physical Therapist Assistant at Fyzical Therapy & Balance Center in Lexington.

She told me about their company's campaign to help make others aware of fall prevention.

The name of this campaign is “Fight the Falls.” Bob Carpentar, Physical Therapist, Athletic Trainer Certified, of Fyzical Therapy & Balance Center said “it brings to light the devastating effects of falling and shows Lexington residents how they can prevent falls through balance therapy.”

Preventing a fall is easy with these steps:

• Find good balance by doing balance and strength exercises.

• Review medications with your doctor to make sure they don’t make you fall.

• Arrange annual vision and hearing checks.

• Increase lighting in dim areas at home or work.

• Make stairs safe and install grab bars where needed.

•  Talk to your healthcare provider and family about fall prevention.

During this month, Lexington residents may go to Fyzical Therapy and Balance Centers for a free fall risk assessment for you or a loved one.

Please speak with your loved ones and encourage them to take a fall risk assessment to put their minds and yours at ease.
