Club Radius for special needs

Posted

Thanks to Maureen Garrison, one of my faithful readers, for a great idea.
She read my story on Tim Tebow’s Night to Shine.
She told me that Radius Church also has a program for adults and young people with special needs.
Club Radius is a social activity for adults 18 years and older who live with parents in Lexington County.
The church saw a need for individuals with disabilities who are leaving high school. Some have a difficult time maintaining friendships and making new friends due to their limitations and community acceptance.
When Ken Spencer and his wife started, they looked for a church home with programs for their special needs daughter. There were few at that time, but they found a home at RADIUS even though the church had no such program.
Ken discussed it with church leaders who backed the idea. Pastor Chris Seeby told me “it was Ken’s idea, and he started it.” Ken’s idea became Club Radius that provides stimulating and enjoyable social activities for those with special needs, like their daughter.
On the 1st and 3rd Monday nights each month, 80-90 people gather in the gym at Radius on West Main Street in Lexington.
Some come in wheelchairs. Some have autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, blindness or some other limitation.
Their age range is 18-67 years old.
They enjoy Bible study, games, other activities and food.
They participate to whatever extent they are able.
Twice a year they have a pizza party.
One of the participants, a young woman in her 20s, will help teach a Sunday school class and wants to be a missionary to special needs people.
Volunteers keep the meetings light, happy and engaging for all. Maureen, who has MS and is in a wheelchair, worked at the Babcock Center for 23 years. She joined the volunteer group 4 years ago as a way of filling a void in her life and continuing her work with special needs folks.
She had high praise for Ken and the ministry.
Way to go, Ken.
