Do you have a social media will?

A social media will is what it sounds like, a plan for what should happen to your online accounts when you die.

Google has tried to help. They created an “Inactive account manager” tool. You can access it in account settings or go to https://myaccount.google.com/u/0/inactive . After 3, 6, 9, or 12 months of inactivity Google can take action. They can delete your content from its different services or send access to up to 10 trusted contacts you choose. To make sure they don’t do so prematurely, Google will send an alert. The alert is sent via text message or to an alternate email address. This gives you time to reclaim your content.

Facebook allows you to designate one contact as a “legacy contact”. They can look after your account when you’re gone. Once you pass on, a loved one can notify Facebook with proof of your death. Then your account will become “memorialized”. This will put the word “remembering” in front of your name. If you've chosen a legacy contact they will be able to pin a post on your profile. This can be helpful to let folks know about your memorial service. They can also accept new friend requests and change your cover photo and profile picture. They will not be granted access to your original account. They will not be able to read your messages or delete old posts and photos you made. If you don’t choose a legacy contact, you can set it so your account memorializes with no administrator or for it to completely delete.

Adjust your settings and appoint your trusted contacts, now. Then add instructions for deleting or memorializing your accounts to your will.
