A giveaway saves a life

At a West Metro Chamber breakfast, I met a charming, bubbly mom and daughter.
They have a unique ministry in Swansea.
Suzanne Clark Hackett and her daughter Casey Clark are with The Remnant Ministry.
As an affiliate of Missionary Church International, they help needy folks obtain clothing, bed linens, housewares, mattresses and furniture, at no charge.
Suzanne and her mom, Joanne Clark, started it in 2008 after working with a similar ministry. Suzanne’s daughter Casey joined them later.
They had accumulated a copious collection of clothes.
Joanne felt called to expand the ministry and prayed fervently about what to do with the clothes.
She received a vision, 7 7 7. It meant 7 tables on July 7 at 7 a.m. They held their first successful clothes give away at the Swansea Rec Center. Now they get clothes regularly from multiple sources including stores and a thrift shop.
Originally, they held the event every 3-4 months. Eventually, they teamed up with Swansea UMC to hold the events every 4th Saturday in the church parking lot.
Even though they give away clothes, Suzanne said “It is not really about the clothes, it’s about the people they help.”
They never know how they will help those who come.
For example, about a year ago an older man stopped by to look around. He was a depressed Vietnam vet.
Joanne talked with him a while and invited him to look around. He spied an old piano which he started playing, to everyone’s delight.
It turns out that he had planned to kill himself, but the love and acceptance he felt there changed his mind.
Suzanne said that they show Christ’s love by meeting immediate needs.
Casey added, “it gives them a sense of value and self-worth.” Maybe it will help some break the cycle of poverty.
That’s Christ’s love.
