Hamp Caughman and Jim Barfield had a good idea.

Why not start a Rotary Club in Lexington?

Now, 50 years later, the Rotary Club of Lexington will celebrate a half century of “Service Above Self” Thursday, May 24, at 6 p.m. at Lexington Town Hall.

Caughman was a member of the Rotary Club of Cayce which wanted to expand into Lexington.

They started with 17 charter members. Chick Compton, president of the Cayce club, conducted the chartering ceremony.

In 1970, the club started the first Rotary Horse Show to provide student scholarships at Lexington High School and Lexington Vocational Center.

The scholarship program has donated over $450,000 since its inception. This year the club will donate $30,000 to Lexington, River Bluff and White Knoll High Schools and Lexington Technology Center.

Each school will receive one $4,000 and two $1,000 scholarships. A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a senior at the Chris Myers House in Lexington.

The club contributes to many local, state, national, and international projects. Some of these are Polio Plus, Rotary Foundation, Water Missions International, Rotary Youth Exchange, American Legion, Boys and Girls State, LICS, USO, Sistercare, Wreaths Across America, Lexington Dixie Youth Baseball, Camp Kemo, Relay for Life, Lexington Sheriffs Department, Lexington Police Department, and various other organizations including Hurricane Relief.

Funding for these projects come from an annual golf tournament and the annual oyster roast and car show.

Additional funds are provided from the Jim McElveen CART fund for the cure for Alzheimer’s.
