Rabid racoon reported in Lexington County

Posted

A Lexington resident has been exposed to rabies by a raccoon that tested positive.

“Rabies is usually transmitted through a bite which allows saliva from an infected animal to be introduced into the body, said David Vaughan of the state Department of Health and Environmental Control. Saliva in contact with open wounds or the eyes, nose or mouth could also potentially transmit rabies.

“To reduce the risk of getting rabies, always give wild and stray animals their space.”

Keeping your pets up-to-date on their rabies vaccination is one of the easiest and most effective ways you can protect your family.

If you think you may have been exposed, immediately wash the affected area with plenty of soap and water. Get medical attention and report the incident to (888) 847-0902.
