Summerproof your phone

Summer selfie sessions wouldn’t be complete without photos of sun and ocean waves. Unfortunately, water, sand and sun aren’t phone-friendly. Here are a few low-cost ways you can save yourself from a costly mid-vacation phone replacement.

Beat the heat
Keep your phone out of direct sunlight and off the ground. The easiest ways to keep your device safe are to keep it in your bag, in a drink koozie, or underneath a t-shirt or cover up that you’re leaving on land while you take a dip. In addition to sunlight, your phone generates its own heat when it operates. Shut down battery-guzzling apps like games and turn off Bluetooth, wi-fi, and location services when they aren’t needed. If you’re going to be out a long time, you may want to turn it off entirely.

Skip the sand
It’s important to avoid getting sand in your ports because it can scratch your screen damage buttons. Dust plugs will keep your device from picking up sand granules and you can make your own by cutting the parts that go in your phone off old or fraying charging cables. If you have a waterproof case it can also help prevent sand damage.

What about water?
Seawater is worse for your phone than regular tap water and can cause corrosion even in waterproof phones. Putting your device in a Ziplock bag can help prevent splash damage while preserving functionality. If you’ll be spending a lot of time time near the water or are especially unlucky with phones, it might be worth investing in a Drycase or Lifeproof. For the most security consider a waterproof dry back that will keep your valuables nearby. (The floating bags are great for preventing damage AND theft!)
