Is your router up to date?

Posted

If you’ve read Tech Talk for long, you know how important it is to update software.
You know having updates and patches installed can protect you from cybersecurity threats. Did you know your internet router needs updates, too? Those of us with cable internet have 2 boxes which make our internet work. They are a modem and a router.
The modem is plugged into the cable connection. The router plugs into the modem.
If you have a wireless network, it may have an antenna, too.
If you only have 1 box, then you likely have a combination modem/router.
Why does your router need updates?
Your computer, tablet and smartphone need updates to protect you when you use them. Your router needs updates since it controls everything you do online. Everything you do on the internet flows through that little box. If it’s not equipped to protect you, that can be bad news.
If you haven’t updated your router lately, it may need a manual update. Some routers will update automatically, so you might be safe, but it’s best to check.
If you have a D-Link or ASUS router, you should update your router ASAP.
The tech blog Bleeping Computer revealed 5 severe vulnerabilities that allow hackers to inject harmful code and expose sensitive information. Patches were released in July. If you have a router made by another company, you’ll need to check the settings to see if you need an update.
Next week I’ll share how to get into your router settings and update it safely
