Water balloon showers in Honduras

Elizabeth Murray at Lexington UMC is one of my favorite youth ministers.
I just had to hear about her recent trip to Honduras with 5 adults and 5 youth since I’ve been there 6 times.
She told me Honduras Outreach International is an annual trip with the SC Methodist Conference. They partner with one village for 2 years and then move to another for 2 years.
They start the day with a traditional VBS. One theme was about David and Goliath. Someone thought it would be fun to use water balloons to represent the “5 stones from a brook” David used to fell Goliath.
It was!
You’ve probably already surmised that good ideas can go wrong. Pretty quickly it became chaotic. But it was good “clean” fun for the Hondurans.
Another clever idea was using wind socks to demonstrate how God, like air, is always with us.
There were also sports like soccer, American football and lawn darts. There were plenty of arts and crafts, too.
In construction work, they poured concrete floors in homes, built Eco stoves from concrete blocks and built “pilas” or wash stations, painted the walls of a kindergarten and planted fruit trees.
Since evangelism is always part of their trips, they spent time visiting homes with the local pastor. They offered to pray for the residents spiritual, physical and other needs. Elizabeth believes it is a good first mission trip for youth and young adults.
