Do you sometimes have a craving for something sweet?
Have you eaten something sweet and then felt sick? You may be having fluctuations in your blood sugar level. This may mean you could be diabetic.
I have experienced dips in my blood sugar and had to eat something quickly to increase it. This normally lasts for a few minutes before I feel normal again.
Our bodies naturally produce the hormone insulin. The pancreas releases insulin to help your body store and use sugar and fat from the food you eat.
Diabetes occurs when little to no insulin is being produced by the pancreas. You may experience symptoms of hunger, fatigue, nausea, urinating more often, feeling of thirst, dry mouth, itchy skin, or blurred vision.
If you have experienced any of these symptoms, make an appointment with your family physician to get a glucose test.
The 3 types of diabetes are Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes. Each one is different.
Type 1 diabetes treatment includes insulin therapy, diet and exercise.
Treatment for Type 2 can include control of weight and diet, exercising, and avoiding low cholesterol levels.
Gestational Diabetes occurs in pregnant women. Treatment includes daily blood sugar monitoring, healthy diet, exercise and monitoring of the baby. If your blood sugar levels get too high, medication is almost always needed.
You can buy equipment for home use to check your blood sugar levels. Keep a log of your sugar levels before and after meals.
