Is a hospitality tax in Chapin’s future? 

Chapin residents could pay 2% more for prepared food in Chapin.  

Everyone eating at restaurants within town limits will pay the tax. 

Irmo, Newberry, Prosperity and Lexington already charge this tax.

Proceeds could go to enhance the S-48 DOT Projects, building pedestrian walkways, encourage tourism and preserve green space.

George Duke, a supporter of the tax, said, “My wife and I eat out at least 3 times a week and shop 80% locally. I will be impacted as much as anyone.” 

Donna Haile Keller does not support the tax.
“No, no no!" she said. "It is hard enough to get people to support local business in Chapin.”

Nichole Burroughs of the Town of Chapin said, “To fund this effort, a hospitality tax was found to create the greatest access to revenue with the lowest impact on our citizens. With a limited budget, these critical projects are not possible. The revenue from a hospitality tax would make these projects a reality, greatly improving the quality of life.”

“If it is only 2% tax, I’ll never feel it financially," said Chris Turner.

Al Koon, a town council member, said,  “The hostility tax is an opportunity to invest back into our town and make Chapin a better place to live.”  

The town is taking input from the public.
