Lexington 2 high schools have long-standing traditions of service to the community. Now, their Student Councils are teaming up to make a difference.
Seeking a project they could work on together, Airport High School and Brookland-Cayce High School are holding shoe drives at each school to support the Shoe Ministry at State Street Baptist Church in Cayce.
The goal is to collect 2,500 gently worn or new shoes by June 1. 
"Both of our Lexington 2 high schools serve their communities well and consistently, and I love seeing the two schools come together to have an even greater impact,” said Airport teacher and Student Council adviser Daniel Bailey. “Separately our schools are doing great things, but together, I believe we can reach even more people and do phenomenal things as a district.”
Both councils keep a busy slate of service activities each spring, with Brookland-Cayce wrapping up a canned food drive this week for Harvest Hope Food Bank, and Airport recently completing its annual Camp Kemo Charity Week.
The two councils came up with the idea of teaming up on a project after meeting together earlier this year, according to Brookland-Cayce Student Council adviser Ryan Van Omen. He said students are eager to pool their strengths as individual councils to have a bigger impact in the community.
Both Bailey and Van Omen say other team projects are in the works.
“The fact of the matter is, in our close-knit community, a sense of unity is powerful,” said Van Omen. “By joining our councils for joint community service projects and endeavors, I can’t imagine the impact we will have for years to come.”
Shoe donations are being accepted at both high schools through June 1. Community members are welcome to drop off donations.
