Consumer alert: 3 food threats

Posted

Product dangers have become part of life in modern day Lexington County.
The latest 3 are:
• ALDI has recalled and removed from its shelves 2-pound bags of Rio Duero peaches, nectarines and plums which may contain listeria monocytogenes.
The organism causes serious and sometimes fatal infections in children and frail or elderly people with weak immune systems.
Symptoms are fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, stomach pain and diarrhea.
• CVS Health and Equate have been recalled for high concentrations of baby ibuprofen sold at Walmart, CVS and Family Dollar.
Infants susceptible to adverse effects of ibuprofen could be at a slightly elevated risk if they’re given the drug from a recalled bottle.
Symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain and vomiting.
• Consumer Reports found many fruit juices contain harmful levels of arsenic, cadmium and lead.
The non-profit research group tested 45 apple, grape and pear juices and fruit blends and found elevated levels of heavy metals in nearly 21 of them, many marketed for children.
Drinking just 4 ounces a day can cause concern, Consumer Reports said.
Drinking lots of juice can raise risk because children may ingest heavy metals in baby foods, rice products, and other foods.
