SC daily deaths set new record at 93

SC health officials reported a record 93 covid deaths Friday.

74 deaths had been the highest previous single-day toll.

5 of those deaths were in Lexington County and 3 in Richland County.

Of the 93 deaths, 79 were elderly (65 and older), 13 were middle-aged (35-64) and 1 was a young adult (18-34).

The disease has taken the greatest toll on elderly residents.

The average age of all who have died from covid complications is 75.

81% of those who died were over 60.

Of deaths Friday, 16 were in Greenville, 11 Spartanburg and 7 each in Anderson and Florence.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control announced 1,845 new confirmed cases

Of 11,153 tests reported Friday, 16.5% were positive infections.

That means 83.5% were negative or virus free.

Lexington led all Midlands counties Friday with 125 new covid cases.

Richland County followed with 119 and York with 117.

Greenville, the state’s most populous county, has reported more than twice as many cases as any other county.

Greenville again led all counties with 191 cases Friday.

That was low for Greenville which has had more than 800 cases in a single day.

Anderson County had 141 and Spartanburg County 118.

Hospitals report they are near capacity and emergency rooms are overwhelmed.

In Lexington County, 90% of beds are full.

In Richland County, 79% were occupied Friday.

Hospital cases were at 2,424 Friday, the 4th straight day of more than 2,400.

Of those, 473 are in intensive care and 289 are on ventilators.

More than 25% of all inpatients are being treated for covid-19.

Since March, 5,513 virus deaths have been reported and 341,597 confirmed cases. 

Another 34,370 cases were probable positives with another 524 probable deaths, including 11 Friday.

SC has received 195,200 doses of Pfizer and 117,900 doses of Moderna vaccine.

98,449 1st doses of Pfizer and 21,421 doses of Moderna vaccine have been given.

Another 26,349 2nd doses of Pfizer vaccine have also been given.
