Dick Harpootlian is making waves as a senator the way he did as a prosecutor.
Attorneys for Harpootlian, who represents Irmo, want the Senate Republican Caucus to turn over its fundraising and spending records.
They have filed a lawsuit against Republicans who failed to defeat him in last year’s Senate election.
They believe the caucus records will help overhaul campaign finance rules, crack down on dark money political groups take from special interests and spend on GOP campaigns, The State newspaper reported.
Republican Caucus’ attorneys argued in court that this is a “political witch hunt” for records irrelevant to Harpootlian’s case. 
Circuit Judge Casey Manning is expected to make a decision later this month.
Last October, Harpootlian successfully sued the caucus to block attack ads that labeled him as “too extreme” to hold public office and compared him to Democratic socialist Bernie Sanders.
His lawsuit alleged the caucus’ $200,000 campaign to defeat him broke a state law that limits a political party’s donations to a single candidate to $5,000 an election cycle — a law that caucus attorneys say does not apply to their group.
A district judge sided with Harpootlian, taking the caucus’ ads off the airwaves. 
After Harpootlian defeated Dunn in November, the state Democratic Party chairman wants the judge’s ruling to become permanent, affecting other electoral races.
