Here’s heartening news for frustrated Lexington County seniors.
About 30,000 more Moderna vaccine 1st doses are expected in SC over the next 3 weeks.
Another 40,000 doses from SC’s long-term care reserve should soon be available.
The state has changed Phase 1a to anyone age 70 and older but left those age 65-69 in Phase 1c behind teachers, police officers, firefighters and grocery store and public transit workers.
Despite good intentions, SC officials don’t yet have enough vaccine for everyone in Phase 1a.
That includes health care givers, 1st responders and those age 70 or older.
Yet the governor is talking about dropping the age of eligibility to 65.
That would add another 310,000 seniors if those age 65 to 69 move to Phase 1a.
Gov. Henry McMaster said Monday he believes those 65 and older should be next in line, The State newspaper reported.
They are now in Phase 1c and projected to become eligible in May.
McMaster did not provide an exact date but as soon as possible.
Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman wants to include teachers and other school staffers.
Asked if he would include teachers, McMaster said he believed seniors should go 1st.
Many other states already have opened eligibility to those 65 and older.
The Centers for Disease Control recommended those 65 and older should be eligible.
Yet to receive even the 1st vaccine dose are about 650,000 of almost 1 million eligible in Phase 1a as of Monday, DHEC data shows.
