State senators may require health officials to start vaccinating teachers within 30 days.
Gov. Henry McMaster has resisted calls for immediate teacher and school staff vaccinations. With limied supplies, the govenor says those age 65 and older need vaccine 1st.
The Senate proposal also would require all school districts to offer in-class instruction 5 days a week by March 22.
Recent research indicates closed schools and remote instruction are doing irreversible damage to student learning and mental health.
"Roughly half our schools offer 5-day, in person instruction for students," Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey who represents Lexington County said.
"The other half is either completely virtual or offering a hybrid (combination virtual/ in-person) format.
"Thousands of South Carolina students have not been in a classroom for 11 months.
"I believe it is imperative that we get our children back in the classroom in front of their teachers and salvage as much of this school year as possible.
"I am convinced vaccinating teachers now will allow us to do that and I am convinced that not vaccinating teachers now will cost us the school year.
"We can vaccinate all teachers and school support staff with  little disruption to existing appointments for senior citizens.
"We have more than 265,000 doses as of Sunday with approximately 75,000 more expected this week.
"This resolution gives us that opportunity."
The Senate is expected to vote this week.
