Leaphart Elementary School in Irmo was placed on a lockout Tuesday afternoon.
"Lock out means exterior doors are locked, but kids and teachers can more around freely inside," District 5 spokesperson Katrina Goggins told the Chronicle.
The Lexington County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of someone who thought they heard shots fired in the neighborhood near the school, WLTX News reported.
The Irmo Fire Department told News19 it appears the report was unfounded.
No injuries were reported.
"Safety is our top priority. Today's brief lockout was a reminder of the importance of our coordination with law enforcement. We all play a role in keeping schools safe, and we will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure our schools remain safe places to learn," Goggins said.
