Lexington unemployment claims lowest of top 6 counties

Greenville, Richland report highest number of claims

1,015 people filed unemployment claims in Lexington County in the week ending June 6.

Greenville County had a state-high 1,993 unemployment claims followed by Richland (1,858); Spartanburg (1,803); Charleston (1,501) and Horry (1,161).

Lexington had the lowest number of claims of the 6 largest counties.

SC has paid more than $2.1 billion in state and federal unemployment benefits since March 15.

After nearly 2 months of decreases, SC claims rose with 22,734 people filing.

That’s an increase of 3,748 claims from the previous week.

It pushes the number in the last 12 weeks to 582,265, according to Department of Employment and Workforce data.

Among the 10 industries with the highest number of claims, temporary help services had 1,072 claims filed, full-service restaurants had 646 and limited-service restaurants 563.

Manufacturing industries were represented in 4 of top 10 categories: tire manufacturing (427), broadwoven fabric mills (355), yarn spinning mills (322) and ball and roller bearing manufacturing (205).

Manufacturers are still dealing with supply chain snags and reduced demand.

This is the 3rd year unemployment claims have risen the week after Memorial Day.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated the national unemployment rate fell by 1.4% to 13.3%.

The economy added 2.5 million jobs from April to May.

The unemployment rate for black workers rose to 16.8% from 16.7% and for Asian workers to 15% from 14.5% .
