Matheny retires at Medicine Mart

Johnny Matheny was given quite a send-off at his surprise retirement party at Medicine Mart in Lexington.

Numerous friends and customers came by to give their best wishes during the aftenoon. Johnny, his wife Cheryl by his side, shook many hands while staying open overtime.

Friends enjoyed cake, sandwiches and tea on this special occasion.

When asked what he was going to do in his spare time, Johnny said he wasn’t sure, but don’t call him. He’s retired!

After more than 33 years, it is well deserved. But owner Michael Gleaton and capable staff will continue Johnny’s legacy of excellent service.

St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church ELCA held its annual spring luncheon for mothers, daughters and friends last Saturday. “His Eye is on the Sparrow” was the theme carried out in table decorations of unique bird houses and flowers. Places were marked with miniature bird nests and candy eggs.

Speaker for the occasion was Dawndy Mercer Plank from WIS-TV. She carried out the theme in her inspiring talk. Entertainment was by members of St. Stephen’s Youth Choir, and Sylvia Looney, Suzanne Swaffield, Gay Clark, Melissa Rawl, Karen Thouvenot, Karen Spiker and Tina Prend-Bennett.

Beulah Glover was recognized for her upcoming birthday, May 26, when she will turn 101 and once again walk the Lake Murray Dam. Agnes Corley wad thanked for the numerous iced pound cakes she made for the occasion. They were outstanding.

Connor Watkins says the Great Lexington Chamber hosted a Business After Hours at Grow Financial Federal Credit Union last week. Guests enjoyed food from Good Fells and drinks served by Ed’s Bartending. Those attending included board members Angela Klosterman and Shelley Metropol, as well as ambassadors Trey Powell, Amy Sease De-Vore, Chris DeSanty, Megan Brasington, Mike Anderson and Alex Huggins.

Linda Griffith says the American Legion Post 7 will hold its regular meeting May 14 at 7 p.m. with dinner. The Auxiliary meets at 6 p.m. Call the commander for reservations, 359-1278.

Jacob Koon, son of Sheriff Jay Koon and wife Linda, received his Eagle Scout Honor Award April 29. He is a member of Troop 307 at Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church.

I had the pleasure of attending the ceremony in 1987 when the Sheriff himself received his Eagle Scout badge at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. Congratulations.

Elizabeth “Liz” Durham, hair stylist at Salon 1404 in Lexington was reminded of a very pleasant occurrence upon the recent passing of former First Lady Barbara Bush.

Liz had the honor and privilege of styling Mrs. Bush’s hair when she was an overnight guest at the Marriott Hotel in Columbia.

She reports Mrs. Bush was appreciative, non-pretentious and very pleasant to be with. She later send Liz an autographed picture signed with “Gratitude and very best wishes.”

Congratulations to Otis Rawl, who was elected president of the Lexington County Gamecock Club, and to Pete Oliver, who was elected vice president at the club’s monthly meeting last week.

Happy birthday to Colene Hook, who is celebrating her 90th this Friday with family and friends at Wellmore of Lexington.
