More baseball equipment arrives in Belize

Posted

More than 2,800 pounds of baseball equipment and uniforms from Lexington County has arrived in Belize.
“What a blessing,” Pastor Victor Hernandez wrote Sybil Jarrells of West Columbia, originator of the baseball program in Belize.
“We will be able to outfit all of the 12 teams who asked to join our baseball program. We thank God for the caring people in Lexington. The kids pray for you every time we gather to practice or play.”
Belize is the only Central American country with no organized baseball.
When Pastor Hernandez said he had 90 boys who wanted to play little league and they only had 2 bats, 2 balls and 2 gloves, Sybil said, “I’ll take that.”
That was a little more than 2 years ago.
In 2019, 7 teams were playing thanks to the generous people of Lexington County, The Lexington Blowfish, The Lexington County Chronicle and the West Metro Rotary Club.
The first organized baseball game was played in Jacintoville, Belize on a re-purposed soccer field May 11, 2019.
“It is amazing how God can take a simple program and make it a life lesson,” Sybil said.
“For every hour the boys play baseball, Coach Patrick and Pastor Victor have an hour of Bible study. God’s plan at work.”
Interest in baseball began to grow in the Toledo District of Belize and Pastor Hernandez got 12 requests for equipment from churches, schools and towns.
Now 12 more teams will be playing in 2020 and more requests are pouring in to Pastor Hernandez.
April 1, 2020 will kick off the season with the additional equipment. With a growing program, we continue to need equipment.
