New Chapin school to open in fall of 2021

Amick's Ferry Road project progressed despite heavy rains

Construction of a new Chapin elementary school is on schedule.

That's the assessment of Lexington-Richland District 5 officials.

Trustees were updated on progress on Amicks Ferry Road at their meeting June 15.

Construction managers reported significant rain fell during construction.

Critics have raised questions about use of wet bricks they say could lead to mold inside the building.

Neighbors have opposed the site.

They say Amicks Ferry Road is too narrow and congested for more traffic.

Preliminary work began last fall, keeping the project on track.

“They worked through historical weather as well as the pandemic,” said Greg Hughes, president of Contract Construction, the district’s Construction Manager at Risk.

Second floor masonry, roofing and brick work are weeks ahead of schedule, he said.

The district plans to hold a public dedication before it's officially opened in the fall of 2021.

Longtime administrator Cassy Paschal will be principal of the new school.
