Despite an unexpected 1,336 new SC covid cases, only 1 death was reported Sunday.

That death was an elderly Richland County patient who died Friday.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control Sunday announced:

- 1,319 new confirmed cases and 17 new probable cases.

Lexington County had 97 new cases, a record to date.

Richland County was 3rd highest in SC with 109 new cases.

Greenville had 187 cases and Spartanburg 121.

We have asked DHEC for an explanation for the sudden surge in cases.

Previously, some labs have released results late and in large batches.

DHEC responsed that "No one was sitting on results.

"We provide information as it is received to DHEC.

"Regarding deaths, they vary from day to day so we suggest looking at trends in data over time.

"Our COVID-19 Deaths in South Carolina Over the Previous 60 Days, by Date of Death chart is an excellent resource."

- Confirmed cases to date are 169,228, probable cases 8,795, confirmed deaths 3,687 and 249 probable deaths.

- As of Saturday, 2,020,577 tests have been conducted in the state.
- 10,827 individual test results were reported to DHEC Saturday statewide.

Of those, the percent tested positive as infected was 12.2%.

That means 87.8% tested negative as virus free.
