Pelion students receive scholarships

The Pelion Ruritan Club awarded scholarships to students May 18. The recipients were Hannah Daggerhart, Megan Dennis, and Briana Monarca.

The Pelion Ruritan Club assists the American Legion with sponsoring Boys and Girls State. The Roy and Ruth Nichols scholarships were awarded to William Bleckley, Ava Miller, and Brittany Summers. The Pelion Alumni Association Scholarship was awarded to Hannah Daggerhart. Alisabeth Kneece and Ashli Smith were awarded the Pelion Peanut Party Scholarships. The Pelion Woman’s Club Scholarship was awarded to Caitlyn Stukes.

The Golden Panther honors a well-rounded student strong in academics, a school and community leader and one who provides service to fellow students. This year’s winner is Ava Miller.

Pelion Middle School teachers Laura D. Beckham and Brandy V. Wood have been named National Geographic Society Geo-Inquiry Institute ambassadors. The Pelion duo will lead the S.C. Geo-Inquiry Institute at USC in June in partnership with the S.C. Geographic Alliance. They will train 10 teams of middle-level educators who will take the process back to their classrooms.

The 4-year-old kindergarten class at Forts Pond Elementary held graduation May 21. Ms. Langden and Ms. Stansell prepared graduation attire and Mrs. Taylor gave awards to the children for their classroom contributions. Congratulations.

Pelion Branch Library hosts Cook the Book June 5 at noon for ages 18 and up. Tween Extreme will learn about Chinese culture June 5 at 3:30 p.m. for grades 4-7. S.C. Plants the Seed on June 7, 1 to 7 p.m. This family-centered program teaches children how nutritional foods factor into a healthy lifestyle and adults learn healthy ways to prepare and store fresh fruits and vegetables. Livingston Farms will be at the library selling locally grown produce. SNAP participants spending at least $5 in benefits will receive $10 worth of tokens. Children attending storytime receive a free book.
