Phone scams peak, new CV threats

Posted

AllAreaCodes.com released a report on US phone scams from 2016-2019.
They revealed South Carolina was the 37th most targeted state during tax season.
Historically phone scams increased 50% in March and April.
That might be worse this year thanks to the new corona virus.
We’ll have more details about corona virus phone scams in the 3/26 edition of the Chronicle, but for now please be on the lookout for phone calls pretending to be health organizations claiming they will reserve a corona virus vaccine or cure for you or the FDIC claiming you need to update or confirm sensitive information to investigate or recover losses.
Remember, the FDIC and government health agencies will NOT send unsolicited correspondence or make unsolicited phone calls asking you for personal information or money and they will never threaten you. Government agencies don’t demand that you pay for anything by gift card, wiring money or digital/cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. They also won’t ask you for personal details like your credit/debit card info, bank account info, social security number or login credentials.
