Post recognizes team who honor our flag

VFW Post 8738 in Lexington honored Lowe’s Hardware employees last Thursday for their continued efforts in paying respect to our nation’s flag.
In March 2017, Kathryn Sabbagha-Corcoran and Patrick Reid of the Lexington Lowe’s location started a program collecting American flags that have been worn out and need to be retired.
They created a drop box for old flags and placed it at the Lowe’s entrance.
The VFW Post has been picking them up since then.
To date, Post 8738 has picked up and retired over 3,000 flags from this single location.
Reid, a US Army veteran and Lowe’s retiree, designed, constructed and maintained the flag box.
Now Sabbagha-Cocoran and Charles Ricard, both of whom work at the Lowe’s Pro-Desk, are keeping up the tradition.
According to VFW flag disposal etiquette, a retired flag should be folded, saluted, burned while the Pledge of Allegiance is recited, then the ashes buried in order to pay proper respects.
The Post presented certificates of appreciation to Ricard, Reid and Sabbagha-Corcoran Nov. 21 at the newly constructed Memorial Walk at the VFW Post in Lexington, standing in front of our nation’s flag.
The VFW and our citizens also thank Lowe’s Store Manager Missy Harvey for her support of this project.
They say “it takes a village” to keep our nation strong, and the Lowe’s team surely does that.
The flag depository is located at Lowe’s Hardware Store, 5412 Sunset Blvd., Lexington. Contact them at 803-358-2000.
VFW Post 8738 is located at 424 Cedarcrest Dr., Lexington.
