Project to light dam walkway after dark

If the Dreher Shoals Dam walkway was lit, would you use it after dark?
Many people say they would because it’s cooler than using it on sweltering summer days.
They also like the safety lighting would provide.
The walkway covers the west side of the 9,000 foot long dam at Lake Murray.
That’s the length of 30 football fields.
Hundreds of people walk or run on it every week.
The walkway never closes.
A group of community leaders from chambers of commerce, civic clubs, both county sheriff’s departments and businesses are discussing the cost and timing of the project to illuminate the path with 110 solar-powered LED lights.
Kenny Kaufman of Outdoor Lighting estimates the solar units would cost about $165,000. The group plans to raise $200,000 to cover materials, installation and other expenses.
They need approval from state officials as the walkway runs along SC-6.
They already have the blessing of SC Electric & Gas which owns the dam.
The community group is seeking sponsors for each of the 110 LED lights.
Lexington Chamber of Commerce President Otis Rawl has pledged $1,500 as the first sponsor.
