Report reveals Lexington death stats and more

The Lexington County Coroner’s office released their 2017 annual report this week. The report includes information about the coroner’s office, Coroner Margaret Fisher, and the deputies who work for the office. It also includes current demographics for the county. Lexington County’s population is now over 282,000 people. We’re one of the most densely populated and fasted growing counties in the state. Our county is 76% white, 15% black/African American, 6% Hispanic/Latino, and 3% is multi-racial. Almost a quarter is under 18 years old and 15% is 65 or older. According to the report, there were 2,134 deaths in 2017. 1,908 were ruled by natural causes, 151 accidental, 25 homicides, 47 suicides, and 3 undetermined. The number one cause of natural deaths was heart-related, second to cancer, and third to Alzheimer’s. The average age at death was 73.9 years. Overdose was the number one cause of accidental deaths (50), followed by motor vehicle collisions (47) and falls (23). To read the full 46-page report, go to www.lex-co.sc.gov
