Republicans support ballot investigations

Poll watchers must be allowed to do their jobs

Republican Joe Wilson led a congresional delegation's support for President Donald Trump Tuesday.

Wilson of Springdale and 4 other Republican US House members pledged support for Trump's decision to contest suspicious ballot counts in several states in the presidential election.

The lawmakers support the Trump Administration’s ongoing legal battles surrounding what they claim are instances of voting “irregularities,” WIS-TV reported.

Wilson was joined by fellow representatives Jeff Duncan, Tom Rice, Ralph Norman, and Congresswoman-elect Nancy Mace.

They want Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania and other states to allow:

- Poll watchers to stand closer to ballot counters to see what they are counting.

- Stricter photo ID laws.

- More frequent reviews of voter registration rolls.

- Other proposed election law reforms.

“I am concerned and disgusted with the election irregularities and improprieties that occurred last Tuesday all across America,” Wilson said.

While they cast doubt about the election process in swing states like Pennsylvania, the Republicans said they have faith in South Carolinian’s elections system.

The delegation championed South Carolina’s requirements that:

- All mail-in-ballots be requested before being sent out.

Pennsylvania mailed thousands of unrequested ballots, many to deceased voters

- Ballots be returned in time to be counted on election day with other ballots.

More than 20,000 Pennsylvania absentee ballots have impossible return dates and more than 80,000 have return dates that raise questions.

51,000 ballots were marked as returned a day after they were sent out, an extraordinary speed given Postal Service delivery times.

Nearly 35,000 ballots were returned the same day they were mailed.

More than 23,000 others have a return date earlier than the sent date.

More than 9,000 have no sent date.

25,000 Pennsylvania nursing home residents requested mail-in ballots at the exact same time.

This suggests someone was involved in illegal nursing home ballot harvesting.

“South Carolina should really be the example for other states to follow,” Mace said.

"We did a great job under extraordinary circumstances."

The lawmakers said they want to make sure all voters feel confident in the outcome of elections

They said their demands are to "trust but verify" - a strategy made popular by President Ronald Reagan.

The lone Democrat in the delegation, Rep. Jim Clyburn, said he disagrees with his colleagues.

“The election is over," he said.

"Put it behind us and let’s go forward toward a more perfect union.”
