You may think you are politically astute and involved.

As a Chronicle reader, you probably are.

But researchers found many South Carolinians are not like you.

Just 3 weeks before Election Day, only 61.4% of South Carolinians of voting age voted in the 2016 presidential election and 53.4% in the 2018 midterm.

The personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2020’s Most & Least Politically Engaged States.

South Carolina was in the bottom 3rd in the nation.

The study does not reveal specific Lexington County voting data.

To determine where Americans are most involved, WalletHub compared the 50 states in 11 key indicators of political engagement. They range from “percentage of registered voters in the 2016 presidential election” to “total political contributions per adult population.”

Political Engagement in South Carolina (1=Most; 25=Avg.):

  • 21st – % of Registered Voters in 2016 Presidential Election
  • 43rd – % of Electorate Who Voted in 2018 Midterm Elections
  • 28th – % of Electorate Who Voted in 2016 Presidential Election
  • 40th – Change in % of Electorate Who Actually Voted in 2016 Elections vs. 2012 Elections
  • 43rd – Total Political Contributions per Adult Population
  • 16th – Voter Accessibility Policies
