SC Guard finally returns home

Inaugural duty turned into weeks instead of days

Posted

It has to be a relief to return home.
SC National Guard soldiers have been sleeping in hallways and taking breaks in Washington parking garages .
They were assigned for a few days to aid in President Joe Biden's inaugural but ended up staying weeks longer.
Guard soldiers from other states are still there although no immediate threat has appeared.
An hour ahead of schedule, hundreds of guard troops arrived in SC at 7:30 am .
“We are proud of our service,” US Army Brig. Gen. Jeff Jones said. “Very thankful for the families and employers who saw us off and supported us.”
Guardsman John Shytle was among 650 men and women from the state called to leave his wife Megan and 9  kids including newborn son, Jethro.
“We literally gave birth about an hour after he was telling me he would be going,” Megan said.
“He’s been gone before, missed one in a deployment to Iraq and our last baby he was at the Police Academy so it’s normal.”
The Chronicle has been unable to find out how many Guard soldiers from Lexington County took part.
