Senate attempt to ban all abortions fails

Posted

South Carolina Senators voted 28-10 in favor of a proposted anti-abortion law last week.

Under the law, abortions would be banned except in cases of rape, incest, or a threat to the mother’s life.

Critics staged a late-night filibuster which sent the bill back to subcommittee. It won’t move forward this session.

Had it passed, the bill would have ignored the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision which ruled abortion falls under the right to privacy clause of the 14th amendment.

Republican Senator Shane Massey welcomed a court challenge of the ruling, stating, “It’s designed to give the court an opportunity to revisit Roe v. Wade.”

Democratic Senator Brad Hutto suggested adding a proposal to outlaw “dismemberment” abortions.

This procedure was used in 22 out of the 5,736 medical abortions perfomed in the state in 2017.

Gov. Henry McMaster has previously stated that he will sign any anti-abortion legislation.
