SC lawmakers have approved a medical marijuana bill.
Under federal law, marijuana is considered a Schedule 1 narcotic. That means marijuana has no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse, according to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.
Some state senators disagree when it comes to the medical benefits of marijuana. A Senate committee approved the most recent bill 8-3 this April.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Tom Davis, would approve medical marijuana use. It also establishes a regulated medical cannabis industry in the state, so patients can acquire marijuana legally.
A 2016 Winthrop Poll showed 78% of SC residents approve of making cannabis legal for medical purposes.
President Trump’s hands-off approach to state-regulated marijuana use bodes well for those who fear federal prosecution.
Recreational marijuana is legal in nine states, and medical marijuana is legal in 29 states.
Under federal law, patients using marijuana legally in their state can still be prosecuted federally. Time will tell whether state or federal law will rule.
The bill will have to come to the Senate floor for debate, which will not happen until next year. The House has not yet taken action.
