Swansea coach fights for his reputation

Posted

Gregory Wright arrived at Swansea High School three years ago with enthusiastic support.
The head football coach and athletics director now finds himself removed from both positions.
A month after being demoted to assistant AD, Wright was fired as head football coach last Thursday.
Wrestling coach Eric Pack was reportedly named the interim head football coach.
Lexington District 4 and Swansea High officials were unavailable due to the July 4th week break.
Wright referred inquiries to his attorney, Lewis Cromer of Columbia.
According to Cromer, Wright’s firing was based on “false information” from a few individuals with “an agenda that they’ve been formulating and working on the last year to get rid of him.”
Cromer would not identify publicly the alleged individuals. He said that after Wright was demoted, officials offered him a physical education teaching position at another middle school at the same salary.
Cromer disputed reports about an incident regarding player safety June 25 which may have led to Wright’s dismissal.
He cited Wright’s support among his players and fellow coaches and believes accusations have “damaged” his client’s credibility.
“His reputation has been trashed by what has happened to him,” Cromer said. “And now, he has to wonder who’s going to offer him a job? What is his future going to be because he was a rising star till this happened to him.”
Wright is former special teams player and outside linebacker at the University of South Carolina. Swansea hired him in 2016 from Eau Claire. He had led the Shamrocks to three wins - their most since the 2010 season and after 4 years in which they were 2-41.
Wright led the Tigers to a 7-15 record in two seasons, but made the Class 3A playoffs each time.
Cromer has written Lexington District 4 superintendent Linda Lavender and the district’s attorney. In her letter, Cromer gave the district an opportunity to “reconsider what they have done and warned them that I felt they had violated (Wright’s) rights. I felt they defamed him and possibly discriminated against him.”
Cromer hopes to receive a favorable response from the district this week.
He discussed plans for a press conference with Wright and used a football metaphor to describe the timetable for a resolution.
“The referees are there. The ball’s on the tee. The kickoff is about to begin. The school district has to decide whether they want to play offense or defense with us.
“And they have another decision that they can make better than that. They can call off the game and that would help both sides and be in everyone’s best interest.”
